A STRUCTURAL MATERIAL

Coconut fibres, coconut chips or so-called coconut 'peat' (also called cocopeat or cocogries) have been used as ingredients in professional growing substrates for plants for many years. They are formed from coconut shells as a by-product in the production of food products such as coconut oil, coconut milk and others.

These products are a valuable, organic, rapidly renewable raw material, the use of which is environmentally desirable, provided that their sourcing, e.g. in India and Sri Lanka, complies with social and environmental standards.

Coconut of various textures and fractions is an indispensable component of peat-free substrates. For example, KRONEN^® Substrate for orchids contains coconut chips. The KRONEN^® TERRA PRETA line in its new formulation contains coconut peat, characterised by its dark brown colour and fine, lumpy structure. It is created in the process of 'combing’ of coconut fibres.

PROPERTIES OF COCONUT:

Water storage capacity - a property that is particularly important in peat-free or low peat content substrates created from compost, wood fibres and bark.
Coconut 'peat' ensures an even distribution of water in the substrate and facilitates re-hydration, which is a feature that is useful for re-hydrating over-dried substrates.
A pure product, free from contaminants and pathogens.
Slightly acidic pH - the perfect environment for most plants.
Coconut is a biologically stable material. It decomposes more slowly than other organic raw materials, so substrates containing coconut retain their structure and functionality for longer.
Although washed coconut is characterized by low salinity, it contains small amounts of potassium, which is a macronutrient essential for plant growth and development.
